Project tracker Methodology

Updated June 2026

0.1 About the platform

The Global Project Tracker plots projects on a world map and aggregates the pipeline of net-zero aligned projects announced, those that have reached final investment decision (FID) and those operating. This provides a forward-looking indicator of momentum towards deployment of assets, potential capacity of clean technologies and provision of clean materials, chemicals and fuels. It typically takes four to six years for a project to become operational after FID.

The tool is intended as an aggregated tracker to inform policymakers, financiers and industries on the pipeline of projects around the world by mapping the best available information at asset level including sector, technology, pipeline status, capacity and timeline where available.

0.2 Navigation

The map page plots the full set of decarbonisation assets across energy-intensive industries and transport sectors: aluminium, cement and concrete, chemicals, steel and aviation. The map also shows clean industrial hubs, CCS locations, shipping corridors and some hydrogen projects(from the IEA) as well as locations for existing fossil fuel assets. This can help to identify cross-sectoral opportunities from enabling infrastructure.

The pipeline page aggregates the project pipeline progress. The technologies in scope for projects included in the pipeline are listed under each sector dropdown.

0.3 Pipeline status classifications

  • Announced: Projects that have been publicly disclosed or declared are termed 'announced'. Many projects stall at this stage due to factors such as costs, technical challenges, changes in market conditions or regulatory hurdles.
  • Final Investment Decision (FID): This represents the formal approval from a project developer to proceed with a specific project. At this point, the commitment is made to allocate capital resources and move from project planning to execution (implementation/construction phase). In some cases, construction may be used as a proxy for FID.
  • Operational: These are projects that have reached the stage of being fully operational. Operational projects are actively producing the final product.

The pipeline page also now shows the share of global production that could be met with clean products if the pipeline is realised. This value is calculated by taking the total clean pipeline if realised, and showing it’s coverage over the existing capacity. Global production estimates by IFA, Argus, IATA, International Aluminium Institute, CEMBUREAU, World Steel Association. For Ammonia and Methanol sectors, if the IMOs proposed target of achieving a 5% share of clean fuels in the shipping sector's energy mix by 2030 is met using ammonia and methanol, the annual demand for these fuels will increase by 30 million tonnes per annum (mtpa). The values calculated therefore take into account the demand for clean ammonia and methanol from the shipping sector (assuming 5% of today’s energy demand), reflecting a lower ratio of planned capacity to projected demand.

0.4 Updating the Tracker

The database is updated biannually to reflect new public data and MPP internal review. This refresh improves data accuracy and consistency through stronger duplicate checks, refined treatment of defunct projects, stricter feedstock eligibility criteria, expanded regional coverage across APAC. It provides MPP’s most comprehensive view yet of the global pipeline of commercial-scale, net-zero-aligned clean industry projects.

0.5 Data Sources

Source data is derived from publicly available information along with desk research and partner data, aggregated by MPP - we recognise that there are limitations with collecting data in some regions, and we welcome feedback and information to help us continually improve our data.

We are grateful for the valuable input and collaboration from all our partners, which have enhanced our research and analysis efforts.

Our work draws on a wide range of publicly available sources, sector-specific databases and contributions from industry experts and organisations:

In addition to projects, the map provides a view of existing fossil fuel asset locations, CCS locations, and hydrogen projects. This can help to identify cross-sectoral opportunities from enabling infrastructure.
